How encryption protects you
Think of encryption as a lock on your data. Without the key, it's unreadable gibberish.
One key (symmetric)
Like a safe with one key. You lock your data, and only someone with the same key can open it. Your phone uses this idea (with many keys) to protect everything when locked.
Two keys (asymmetric)
Like a mailbox: anyone can drop a letter in (public key), but only you have the key to open it (private key). Secure websites use this idea to prove identity and agree on private session keys.
Hashing (fingerprints)
Creates a short digest of data. Used to check if files were changed. Passwords should be stored with salted, slow password hashing, not as plain text.
E2E vs regular encryption
Regular: like a sealed bag—the mail carrier can't read it in transit, but the post office (server) can open it. E2E: like a locked box inside the bag—only you and the recipient have keys.
What you need to remember
- Good tools help, but settings and recovery habits matter just as much.
- Never share recovery phrases or backup codes. Treat them like cash.
- If your device is lost/stolen and was unlocked, or you suspect someone knows your PIN, change your passwords immediately. If it was locked with a strong PIN, encryption protects your data.
- HTTPS means the connection is encrypted, and browsers mark sites without it as "Not secure" (many no longer show 'https://' or a padlock at all). It protects only the connection, not the site's legitimacy: phishing sites use HTTPS too, so check the domain name.
